Finally, a New CDMO Coming to Market

“There’s plenty of fish in the sea” – a saying quite apt for the CDMO market. Very fragmented, with even leading players commanding only 3-4% share each and several hundred players worldwide – welcome to the ocean of CDMOs.

With such a diverse field, customers face a certain predicament: How to find YOUR partner? When looking at the market on a macro level, many players are somewhat doing similar things. That is, almost all will claim to be a CDMO (albeit some are predominantly manufacturers, less developers), most will emphasize being customer-focused, and many more have a ‘one-stop-shop’ on their doorbell.

Moreover, the field is remarkably slow. Sure, there is some M&A of existing players, here and there snatching another big pharma site into their network. However, by and large there is little consolidation and overall there seems to be somewhat of a lack of fresh blood in a stale market.

So it is quite refreshing to see a new fish emerge in the sea of plenty – Adragos Pharma, headquartered in Munich with production in Europe and Japan emerged in the field a short time ago.

Adragos pursues an ambitious buy & build strategy. The company was set up in 2020 and incorporated 3 established production sites a year later, and is aiming to acquire additional sites. Andreas Raabe, CEO at Adragos is confident to be on the right path. The company believes in focusing on small molecules and establishing a footprint in Europe Japan and soon North America since these are still the leading pharma markets of today and most of the innovation is generated here. In many aspects, Adragos seems to bring pace and a refreshing new thinking to the game.

Interestingly, the shareholders of the company combine on the one hand the Prange Group, a leading German family office known for their pharma investments and on the other hand Norwegian PE firm, FSN Capital, with long track record in quickly scaling companies.

Adragos offers a wide variety of pharmaceutical services ranging from formulation and analytical expertise to pilot scale and commercial production, and packaging for sterile and non-sterile liquids, solids, and semi-solids. Although focused on the production of Finished Dosage Form (FDF) in the small-molecule segment, Adragos Pharma also performs formulation, analytical development, process development and optimization, technical transfer and validation, and stability testing.

So far so good, so what is really different? “It is less the ‘what’ but the ‘how’ we do things that customers appreciate,” says Angelo Gatto, CCO at Adragos. “We believe in creating highly customer-centric CDMO services. You will notice the difference when working with us. Agility and high service mindset are not empty promises and it is about time to bring this to the market – at scale”.
